August 2003 - APC's Three Steps up to DC heaven.

Advanced Power Conversion PLC of Farnborough, England announces a range of cost-effective, flexible and scalable converters that power new 48V devices from 24V legacy power systems, extending the life of the installed equipment. The new converters are suitable for implementing the new 2.5G and 3G wireless services.

The first is the APC-F501, a compact, low profile, 500W, full-brick, dc/dc converter measuring (116.8mm x 61.0mm x 12.7mm) that very efficiently (typically >90%) converts a lower dc voltage to a higher dc voltage. The versatility of the patented Interleaved Full-Bridge Boost Buck (IFB3) topology permits nominal input voltages of 24Vdc or 28Vdc to be boosted up to a regulated 28Vdc or 48Vdc.

The second product is reached by combining the standard APC-F501 with a heatsink and filtering onto a single board. This provides a straightforward, scalable and cost-effective solution to increased power requirements and the versatility needed for N+1 redundancy.

The third device, the APC2000, supplies up to 2,000W of 48Vdc output from a 24Vdc input from each 2U x 3U unit. The efficiency of the four APC500 dc/dc converters in each APC2000 provides excellent power density and easier thermal management than conventional converters. A 3U high, 19in, rack-mount chassis can house up to four of the hot-swappable converters to supply 8kW of total power, or 6kW of N+1 redundant power. Where space is at a premium, the APC2000 can also be mounted horizontally in a 2U, 19in rack supplying 6,000W of total dc power.

With telecom service providers looking to reduce costs plus protect and leverage their significant investment, the APC range of step-up dc-dc conversion provides an immensely flexible, scalable power solution that is compact, cost-effective and means that new 48V powered technologies can overlay the installed base of 24V powered equipment.

March 2003 - Stepping up to bridge the legacy gap

Extending the life of installed equipment while providing the new 2.5G and 3G services must be the 'dream ticket' for telecom service providers. If the new 48V powered technologies can overlay the installed base of 24V powered 2G equipment, operators can protect and leverage this significant investment.

Providing one of the most cost-effective and flexible solutions to integrate new and legacy power systems, Advanced Power Conversion PLC of Farnborough, England supplies high power density STEP-UP version DC:DC converters as part of its standard range.

APC is unique in offering a 500W "full brick" DC:DC converter that supplies compact, high efficiency conversion (typically >90%) from lower DC voltages up to higher voltage output. The versatility of the APC500 patented IFB3 (Interleaved Full-Bridge Boost Buck) topology permits nominal input voltages of 24 or 28Vdc to be boosted up to a regulated 28 or 48VDC in addition to the more usual step-down voltages.

The ability to provide the STEP-UP conversion is inherent in the IFB3 design topology and is achieved by changing the turns ratio of the patented integrated magnetic component and by changing a small number of components.

Apart from the space saving advantages of a compact, low profile (116.8mm x 61.0mm x 12.7mm) and high power density package (5.53W/cm³), system integration is further assisted by many valuable and original features that have been designed into the APC500 module. Low noise, low input and output ripple current and fixed frequency operation (300kHz) with an external synchronisation facility means that filter design can be simplified, thus reducing development time and lowering cost.

To further assist designers incorporating the APC500 into power systems, the APC converters have a democratic share feature and true single wire parallel connection between modules. This provides a straightforward, scalable and cost-effective solution to increased power requirements and the versatility needed for N+1 redundancy.

Another unique feature of the APC module is the ability to monitor the internal temperature of the module via the on/off pin voltage. This could be used to give early warning of a system cooling fault or to control a variable speed cooling fan for optimum performance. This feature is in addition to the normal protection functions such as over-voltage, under-voltage and short circuit protection that ensure safe and continued operation of the power system without additional design input.

Already released to the market as part of the standard Advanced Power Conversion range, use of APC step-up DC:DC Converters means legacy equipment can now continue to be used in conjunction with the higher voltage new equipment without resort to an expensive overhaul of the complete system.

The new APC-H301 60A high current, low voltage "half-brick" size DC:DC Converter

Having the output fully isolated from the input, allows versatile polarity configurations and grounding connections that further enhances flexibility. Along with a Remote On/Off function the module has a remote sense to minimize the effects of distribution losses by regulating the voltage at the remote-sense connections.

The modules are International Safety Agency approved to meet UL60950, EN60950 and CE mark requirements and incorporate advanced control, safety and protection features including Over-temperature protection, Output over-voltage protection and Output over-current protection.

Featuring a wide input range of 36-75VDC the new modules are initially available with 2.5VDC, 2.0VDC, 1.8VDC & 1.5VDC outputs, which makes the modules particularly suitable for 48V distributed power architecture, including any systems that operate from a -48V battery source.

The APC-H301 series offers increased efficiency, higher power density and a substantial reduction in package size from other, earlier 60A DC:DC converters.

APC powers into market leading efficiency

Advanced Power Conversion PLC of Farnborough, England, today launches the ground breaking APC 500 series DC-DC converter.

A combination of original thinking and leading edge patented technology has resulted in a market leading full load efficiency of over 90% for a 500W DC-DC converter in the industry standard "Full brick" size (116.8mm x 61.0mm x 12.7mm).

This major advance has been achieved by the use of integrated magnetics, Full H bridge transformer with soft switching and current-doubler rectifier, which means that the APC500 redefines power efficiency levels available to embedded systems designers.

The innovative topology is one of the few that supplies continuous input and output current without additional filtering and can be produced in volume.

With an outstanding power density of 5.53W/cm³ (90W/in³) the APC500 also employs Fixed Frequency operation of 300KHz that can be synchronised to an external clock for noise sensitive circuits and helps with the design of EMC filters.

A host of features and previously unavailable intelligence are packaged within the APC500 and include accurate "brick wall" output current limit with foldback output current limit for short circuits, hot plug capability, remote sensing, remote shutdown and single wire connection for parallel operation to provide true N+1 redundancy and a simple route to Kilowatts of compact DC power.

Apart from a comprehensive range of in-built protection features incorporating over-voltage protection and short circuit protection the APC-F501 has some unique functions such as a thermal monitoring voltage which can provide early warning of system fault.

This extra-ordinary 500W DC-DC converter is an important new addition to the APC family of continuous current converters, combining the advantages of a very high power density with a host of monitoring, protection and system friendly features in addition to market leading efficiency.
